Togo’s celebrates 45 years of awesome
We started small, but our sandwich franchise is still growing today
It’s amazing what a little hunger, drive and creativity can do.
Forty-five years ago, one dissatisfied college kid couldn’t find quite the right kind of sandwich to satisfy his hunger. So he made his own, opening up the first-ever Togo’s in a little shack just outside San Jose State University. We’ve come a long way from those humble beginnings in July of 1971, but there are a few things about our sandwich franchise that haven’t changed.
We’re still beloved for our big, fresh, meaty sandwiches. We still pride ourselves on our quality, too — a proprietary spice blend for our premium pastrami, daily-baked artisan breads, fresh-scooped avocado. We still prioritize guest service, too. To mark our 45 years in business, we’re offering retro anniversary commemorative cups and T-shirts and adding oven-roasted turkey to our iconic #24 and our other nine turkey menu items.
Franchisees know this commitment to quality goes a long way toward bringing guests through the door. “Guests come in and they like the sandwich, the people and the value, and they keep coming back,” says Jeff Cohen, who along with his brothers owns 16 Togo’s franchises. “We have guests who come in every day. An employee might happen to see someone’s car pull into the parking lot, and he just stops whatever he’s doing to start making that guy’s sandwich. By the time he’s in the door, that sandwich is almost ready and he’s in and out.”
Why Togo’s has staying power
Resting on our laurels has never been our style. We have honed our franchise systems over the years and built an experienced, accessible team of franchising experts who help guide our franchisees on the path to success.
New franchisees or their designated managers undergo extensive training, including classroom instruction and hands-on experience, so they can open their Togo’s location knowing how to do everything from building a #9 Pastrami sandwich from scratch to managing their inventory using our point-of-sale system. Even franchise owners who have been with us for years have access to ongoing support and training, and everyone has regular interaction with one of our Franchise Business Consultants, who can help owners map out strategies to generate larger margins or evolve into multi-unit ownership.
While guests never see those behind-the-scenes details that keep things running smoothly, they do make a difference to the bottom line.
“There’s a wide appeal. We’re consistent, and that’s important,” Cohen says. “Togo’s has been around for a long time, it’s not going anywhere. We’re a West Coast brand with wide appeal and responsible growth, and that’s good for a brand.”
